In the United States, almost no one can be traced back to their ancestors come from only one place. According to a new study, for many people, their past might be surprising.
Researchers have found that a high percentage of African-American, Hispanic and Latino Americans of European ancestry from outside their ethnic self-identity. For example, in general, African-American genome contains a quarter of European descent; and almost 4% of European Americans have African ancestry.
Senior director of the study, Mountain View, California company 23andMe geneticist Joanna Mountain noted that until recently, “the human population geneticists have tended to ignore the United States.” (The company for this study provides genetic testing.)
Mountain said that, given its long history of migration from around the world, the country “is considered in genetics is chaotic.” But Mountain and her colleagues think they may have a chance to decipher complex genetic ancestry of Americans. If a person is enrolled in 23andMe genetic analysis of the company’s projects, they can choose whether to make their data for research. When the Mountain team to edit the database for this study, 23andMe company has 500,000 customers, and about 80% of people agree to their information for such research. The new first author, 23andMe company Katarzyna Bryc human geneticist noted, which makes data collection for the study than the usual amount of data used to analyze the population mix of the “big one order of magnitude.”
