Brain training does not make you smarter

Considering these, my colleagues and I began to Jaeggi and colleagues conducted this study to repeat. First of all, we have 17 different people to cognitive ability tests, including eight kinds of fluid intelligence tests. We will then be divided into three groups of participants, one third of the people into the experimental group exercises dual n-back task, one-third of people into the placebo group, practice another task, and the remaining one-third One person enters the non-contact control group. Eventually, when the end of the study, we give each a different version of cognitive tests. The results are evident: dual n-back group is not high on the fluid intelligence than the control group. We published these results in shortly after. Another group of researchers published on Jaeggi and colleagues repeated the experiment of another failure.

A meta-analysis of the effects of brain training raised further questions. Researcher Monica Melby-Lervåg and Charles Hulme combines the results of 23 studies and found no evidence of mental training to improve fluid intelligence. (Meta-analysis refers to gather a number of findings of the study, statistical analysis of the relationship between a more accurate – in this case, is to analyze the relationship between training and intelligence to improve.) Jaeggi and colleagues subsequently published their own meta-analysis, the a slightly optimistic conclusion, mental training can increase by 3 to 4:00 IQ. Then, a meta-analysis showed that the most favorable results – including those in the placebo group – a negligible impact on training. In another year, published in the “Nature” magazine, has been highly publicized study, the one by the University of California, Los Angeles professor and entrepreneur Adam Gazzaley led research team, customized training older people to play a video game named nerve Racing (Neuroracer). Theory of neural racing behind by cognitive psychologist Lynn Hasher and Rose Zacks originally proposed. Hasher and Zacks demonstrated in a series of articles in the elderly instant amnesia “senior moments” of the main reasons – forgetfulness, inattentiveness, and other thought lost – is the spirit of “chaos.” That is, when we get older, we are more likely to be something related to the outside world and not distracting thoughts.

Nerve car designed to enhance the ability to filter distractions. Player’s goal is to control the windy road car, while downing identify the specific color or shape with the other hand, ignoring other indication.
